Fans & PC Cooling

The cooling system is a vital part of a computer, as it prevents components from overheating under heavy loads. As the CPU and GPU work, they generate heat that must be moved away from the component's surface and ultimately out of the case. Effective cooling not only improves system performance by preventing thermal throttling but also extends the lifespan of parts and makes the computer quieter.

How to choose the right cooling solution?

When selecting cooling, consider the processor's power draw (TDP), case size, and desired noise level:

  • Air Coolers (CPU Air Coolers): Consist of heat pipes and a heatsink through which a fan blows air. They are reliable, long-lasting, and often more affordable.
  • Liquid Coolers (AIO - All-In-One): Use liquid to transfer heat from the processor to a radiator. AIO units are efficient, save space around the CPU socket, and are excellent for high-performance processors.
  • Case Fans: Responsible for the overall ventilation of the case. Their job is to bring cool air in (intake) and exhaust warm air out.

The most popular brands and standards

Key players in the market include Noctua, be quiet!, Arctic, Corsair, Lian Li, and NZXT. Standards like PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) allow for precise fan speed control based on temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which is better: air or liquid cooling?

Air cooling is often more maintenance-free and offers excellent value for money. Liquid cooling (AIO) provides better cooling capacity for high-end processors and allows for more visually striking builds in smaller spaces.

What is static pressure in fans?

Static pressure refers to a fan's ability to push air through obstacles like dense heatsinks or dust filters. High static pressure fans are ideal for radiators and intake filters.

How often should thermal paste be replaced?

Thermal paste dries out over time; it is recommended to replace it every 2–4 years to ensure optimal heat transfer.

Can a liquid cooler leak?

Modern AIO liquid coolers are sealed units and extremely safe, so leaks are exceedingly rare. They usually come with long warranties covering any manufacturing defects.
